It all began in early 2014.
After forming a great relationship with the legends at World Surfaris, owners Shaun Levings and John Finlay asked if I would be interested in producing a short surf film featuring two world class surfers in remote Indonesia.
It was a dream come true. Combining three of my biggest passions. Surf. Travel. Film. I jumped at the opportunity.
As the year went by the concept, cast and film evolved organically. By mid year we had a new surfer joining WCT surfer Dimity Stoyle and Big Wave charger Andy Schwartz – Enter James ‘Woody’ Wood. A former 2 X World Junior champ and renowned larrikin. The film just got better.
John Finlay was project manager and did a great job in hand picking the crew – Pro Photographer Brett Wortman, TV Producer and personality Chris Parsons and the happy go lucky film making whiz kid/Professional Bird-of-Prey handler (true story) Beau Eastman. Everyone was involved. Everyone was psyched. It was a real mixed bag of personalities and qualities – but as I was to later find out these guys added to some of the biggest laughs and highlights of the trip.
November finally rolled around and it was go time. The concept of the film was all about travel, getting off the beaten path and having a good time with an emphasis on surfing. On the plane over to Bali I leaned over to John and said “Know Where to Go – like, spelt with a K” He responded “An Indonesian Adventure”. I nodded and a title was born!
For the first week we lucked out a bit with waves. I was starting to feel the pressure. We seemed to be getting some amazing travel shots and lifestyle stuff but I kept going to sleep at night thinking – we need waves, this is supposed to be a surf film.
In amongst the lay days we scored some really fun waves right out front staying at the amazing Cucukan Villas on Bali’s East Coast just up from Keramas. Take a look at the video below to see where we stayed. It. Was. Incredible.
In week two we moved from Bali to East Java. We picked up Woody and arrived at the dreamy Istana Ombak.
Then. We scored.
The film was released with the April issue of Tracks magazine and thousands of copies were distributed all over Australia and New Zealand. If you happened to miss it – don’t fear! Downloadable copies are now available in the RAW LENS MEDIA Shop – Watch Know Where to Go now!
An amazing experience enjoyed with a great bunch of humans I’ll never forget. I hope that came through in the film and I look forward to making many more.
Good surfing and bye for now.
